Before you get started
In order to obtain a research authorization, you are kindly asked to fill in the application form below and to submit it including all the necessary enclosures to the Office of Municipalities of the Canton of Zurich. If your research does not concern your own family, you will also need to provide a power of attorney issued by a member of the family concerned.
Please make sure that your research concerns a Civil Registry Office of either the Canton of Zurich or the Canton of Schwyz.

Prepare documents
Before you submit your application, we recommend you prepare all the necessary documents in electronic form (e.g. PDF file). This may include:

Submit application (chargeable)
By submitting your application, you confirm to consent to the related costs.
The authorization fee to obtain personal data from the Zurich civil status registers amounts to at least CHF 75 plus expenses in accordance with art. 1 of the Ordinance on Civil Status Fees. Any expenses incurring from the respective Civil Registry Office will be charged separately.

Your next steps
If your request is granted, you will receive an official authorization which you will have to present to the relevant Civil Registry Office. Pursuant to Art. 47 of the Civil Status Ordinance, notification is made in the form of register extracts. Personal inspection is not permitted.
